Concluding thoughts

Unfortunately, it has come to the end of my blogs exploring water and food in Africa. From being an individual with relatively limited knowledge on the continent of Africa to begin with, this series of blogs has given me an opportunity to gain a more comprehensive understanding and holistic view of the issues currently facing the continent. This experience has allowed me to learn more about the complexities of Africa through cultural, social, economic and geographical lenses.

In the beginning of this process, I set out my intentions to explore the heterogeneity of nations within Africa, avoiding the all-too-common misconception portrayed in the media of the need for foreign aid for Africa as a homogeneous continent. Through exploring various case studies across Africa, these blogs have aimed to shed light on the unique difficulties that each nation faces, and their distinctive ways of tackling the problem.

However, one concept has been made clear throughout the blogs - Africa does in fact have more water resources than it is commonly believed. With the correct knowledge, technology and funding, nations in Africa can harness this to their advantage, and help them tackle the many adversities that they are facing. Whether it is through some of the ideas discussed in these blogs regarding GM crops, groundwater potential or small-scale irrigation (to name a few), Africa may indeed be one step closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals discussed in the very beginning!
